These are insane times as fascism rises again here on Turtle Island, as a form of techno fascism replaces neoliberal capitalism with the goal of shrinking public services as monopolistic billionaires get richer and richer everyday. Starting November 1st, 41 million people, our communities, our families, children, and elders could loose access to food assistance through SNAP programs. Who knows how long this will go on for so we must act now and we have to normalize buying food for our neighbors if we can. Our community institutions, Mosques, restaurants, community cafes, and community and social media influencers must work together right now to serve the millions of people in need. There are clear examples of programs that can be set up quickly within a matter of days to serve food to the masses.
Over the last three years since we moved to the Pacific Northwest we have seen an incredible group of community based organizations and nonprofits who have led local mutual aid and zakat projects serving the most vulnerable people in our communities. Through programs developed by nonprofits like Adasha Turners organization, Modest Family Solutions, to mass feeding programs likes Wasat’s Neighborly Needs program rooted in South Seattle which has been a national leader for community led mutual aid work. Neoliberal capitalism has been taking resources from government and placing the burden on understaffed nonprofits for decades. True socialist infrastructure like what Zohran Mamadani is proposing in New York City is the only long term solution, working in partnership with well funded local organizations.
The Role of Mosques & Houses of Worship in These Times
The majority of our community leaders in the United States, the Imam’s and directors of Islamic centers know social services like SNAP, housing assistance, Medicare and Medicaid, and child care assistance because most of them have been beneficiaries of these programs at some point in their journey as a faith leader. Yet surprisingly, I have only seen one Mosque so far offering to serve food to their community as access to groceries are threatened for so many. That’s Mosque is Islah LA in Inglewood, California led by Imam Jihad Safir where they have put out a call for community assistance through LaunchGood where they have raised $20,000 so far. This money is being used to serve hot meals at the Islah LA campus every Friday for the month of November.
This is an easy model that any congregation can replicate:
Don’t take donations to the mosque or congregation for a couple of weeks and ask people to give to a food campaign instead.
Work with local chefs and food entrepreneurs to prepare hot meals and create a distribution point that makes sense for your congregation.
Work with your youth groups to distribute the meals.
Keep doing this even after the SNAP funding returns because this is just the beginning of this economic / constitutional / capitalist crisis.
How Can Restaurants & Cafes Help Right Now?
When we opened our taco stand, El Xalal Tacos in North Seattle at Barakah Beauty Collective last January with our politics rooted in indigenous and Latino communities we instantly introduced a Mutual Aid Taco set for $15 per person. We also offered larger sets for families for $45 for 10 tacos, and these were instantly some of our most popular menu items. Every restaurant and coffee shop should be doing this right now. Just add these donations as a menu item and keep track of how many you have sold so you can distribute those meals. It’s been beautiful to see a couple of restaurants and cafes modeling this in the Pacific Northwest over the last few weeks as Heretic Coffee, a non-profit coffee shop in Portland has raised more than $310,000 to feed breakfast to people who have lost SNAP benefits. Locally here in Seattle, Toasted bagels have raised $42,000 to keep people fed to feed those on SNAP benefits.
Imagine what we could do with this if every restaurant started taking pre payments for our friends and family who cannot afford to buy food right now? This is a truly circular economy where those who have money right now share that wealth, and it support businesses already struggling, while also feeding people who would not be able to eat at any of these restaurants without going into debt.
El Xalal Tacos is Back to Serve the People
We started our work with El Xalal Tacos through feeding the migrants, and houseless at the US/ Mexico border. We always were more interested in feeding those people most in need who love our food, with beautiful zabiha halal ingredients, then we were in just making money. We have been taking the last few months off to focus on getting the Center for Global Muslim Life financially grounded. We have long term plans that are growing in partnership with El Xalal Tacos, inshallah, but you will have to wait until 2026 to hear about that.
With this crisis just beginning we know we have to get back out here serving the people so El Xalal Tacos is partnering with the Center for Global Muslim Life where you can donate $15 to feed one meal to those in need. We will start distributing the meals throughout the Seattle area starting next Friday, November 7th inshallah. We will keep working with our beautiful immigrant, indigenous and refugee staff in the coming days to take care of you all.
